Actor Joseph Gordon says Alia Bhatt’s Gangubai Kathiawadi ‘felt like a Scorsese film’

Actor Joseph Gordon-Levitt, known for his roles in Inception and 500 Days of Summer, revealed that he was ‘completely captivated’ by Alia Bhatt’s Gangubai Kathiawadi. The American actor, who is currently in India for an event, said that it made him ‘eager to learn more about Indian cinema’ and that watching the Sanjay Leela Bhansali-directorial felt like a Martin Scorsese film.
While speaking with actor Rajkummar Rao at the Indian Film Project (IFP) in Mumbai, Joseph Gordon-Levitt shared his experiences and love for Indian cinema. He praised Alia Bhatt’s Gangubai Kathiawadi, saying it was unlike anything he had seen before.
He said, “I absolutely loved watching Alia Bhatt’s period drama, Gangubai Kathiawadi. It was a truly unique and beautiful film, unlike anything I’ve seen before. The heavy, distinguished drama felt almost like a Scorsese film at times, but then there were these gorgeous musical numbers that were so sincere and well-crafted.”
Joseph continued and explained how Gangubai Kathiawadi made him want to make a film in India. “I found myself completely captivated by the film. It made me eager to learn more about Indian cinema, which is why I wanted to visit India. I’m loving the culture here and the genuine passion for movies and artists. I would love to come back to India and make a film here”, he said.
Gangubai Kathiawadi is a period drama that explores the life of a brothel madam in Mumbai. Alia Bhatt won her first National Film Award for Best Actress for her performance in the film.
Joseph Gordon-Levitt is a versatile actor, filmmaker, and entrepreneur known for his roles in films such as 500 Days of Summer, Inception, Looper, Snowden, Don Jon, and Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F. He has won two Primetime Emmy Awards for his exceptional performances.
